beakerDo you like – or have you ever liked science?  Why or why not?

I wish my experiences in high school could have rivaled a Mythbusters episode or a Ted Talk, but I would I’ve to say science was my least favorite subject ever.  It wasn’t until I was exposed to Mythbusters, Ted Talks, and the musical Atomic that I really became not only interested in science. gekWhat is a geek?  This marvelous group of individuals has become more and more chic (just ask Felicia Day) in the last twenty years.  As a self-proclaimed geek, I tend to bring my sensibilities to whatever I work on, and that includes the upcoming 2015 season for Swiftly Tilting Theatre Project.

Before I share my ideas and views, why not share your ideas about what a geek is and what makes a geek so cool.  Continue Reading

jp-rent-3-articleInlineWith a new year of questions without answers, it’s good to remember this:

The heart may freeze
Or it can burn
The pain will ease
If I can learn

There is no future
There is no past
I live this moment
As my last

There’s only us
There’s only this
Forget regret
Or life is yours to miss

No other road
No other way
No day but today

As we step out onto the precipice of a new year, I’m giving you a great gift that you can either use to create or destroy.  It’s your choice…

Emma: It’s time for all us to believe. Not in magic, but in each other.
Regina: You wanna be friends? After everything that’s happened between all of us?
Emma: I don’t want or expect that. I know there’s a lot of history here and a lot of hate.
Hook: Actually, I quite fancy you from time to time, when you’re not yelling at me
Emma: We don’t need to be friends. What we need to know is the only way to get Henry back is cooperation.
Charming: With her? With him?  No, Emma, we have to do this the right way.
Emma: No, we don’t. We just need to succeed. And the way we do that is by just being who we are–
A hero, a villian, a pirate. It doesn’t matter which, because we’re gonna need all those skills, whether we can stomach them or not.   Once Upon A Time, ABC.

The wonderful thing that all theatre people have in common is:  theatre (uh, gee… thanks for pointing that out).

What we don’t have a common goal of how we achieve this goal.   Continue Reading

money-in-handYou may have begun to see pay-what-you-can performances at some theatres where you can pay any amount for a certain performance date.  We’re taking that a step further by having pay-what-you-can for EVERY performance!

Theatre has become a luxury for most people that deters the everyday person from going to see much, if any, theatre.  We want you to be able to see a show whether you have $1 in your pocket or $100!

Why should I pay more than $1?

Every cent makes you an investor in this company’s productions.  The level of quality of shows and the frequency of shows depends upon having a cooperative theatre environment.  Theatre does not function in a vacuum.  For a live theatrical event to have the most impact, it needs everyone to be involved.  The company organizes the show, the artists create the show, and the audience energizes the show.  If any one of these areas are lacking,  If you like what we’re doing and want it to succeed and flourish we need you to pay as much as you can so that we can reinvest that money into future productions.  The more we have the more you get! The idea for Swiftly Tilting Theatre Project came out of my deep need and love of theatre, which I want to share with everyone.  I forgot when I started the kickstarter that this didn’t mean demanding more from those who have more or not giving to those who have less.

Everything good and right in my life has happened when I have been honest and true.  That doesn’t change because it is “business,” IF WE’RE GOING TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN, WE’RE DOING THIS TOGETHER!

This is one of the first things we learn on Sesame Street and it should be one of the greatest lessons that we can learn:

One of the cornerstones of our mission is to provide theatre for everyone who wants it, regardless of income or status by having pay-what-you-can ticketing for every performance.  To stay true to this goal, starting at a $1 donation every person who donates will receive 1 ticket for 1 performance.

If someone pledges $50 or more, the donors will receive “perks” along with their tickets (this is not a detail of other rewards that come with the tickets). Continue Reading

The Abduction of Helen of Troy by Cesare Dandini

The Abduction of Helen of Troy by Cesare Dandini

To Helen by Edgar Allan Poe

Helen, thy beauty is to me
Like those Nicean barks of yore,
That gently, o’er a perfumed sea,
The weary, wayworn wanderer bore
To his own native shore.

On desperate seas long wont to roam,
Thy hyacinth hair, thy classic face,
Thy Naiad airs have brought me home
To the glory that was Greece
And the grandeur that was Rome.

Lo! in yon brilliant window-niche
How statue-like I see thee stand,
The agate lamp within thy hand!
Ah, Psyche, from the regions which
Are Holy Land!
